Regional and Structural Policy of the EU
European Union regional and structural policy (cohesion policy) complements and supports national policy. EU cohesion policy aims to increase economic and social cohesion between the Member States and reduce regional disparities in development.
With enlargement, social and economic disparities between the regions of the EU have widened and these present new challenges for cohesion policy. The EU channels support to the Member States through Objective programmes prepared by the Member States and approved by the Commission. The programmes are approved for a fixed term. The ongoing programming period runs from 2007 to 2013. Finland’s Structural Fund Strategy 2007 - 2013 defines the targets and focuses based on which funding for different development projects is allocated.
