EIA procedures for new nuclear power projects

Teollisuuden Voima Oy (TVO), Fortum Power and Heat Oy have initiated environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedures for new nuclear power plant units in 2007. TVO  implemented the EIA for the Olkiluoto 4 alternative and Fortum that for the Loviisa 3 alternative.

Fennovoima Oy initiated its EIA procedure on 30 January 2008.

The EIA process involves two stages. First, the power companies prepare the EIA programmes and, at the second stage, draw up the EIA reports. The contact authority for both stages is the Ministry of Employment and the Economy (prior to 1 January 2008, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, MTI, acted as the contact authority).
