Nuclear energy administration

The supreme management and supervision in the nuclear energy sector are vested with the Ministry of Employment and the Economy. It drafts proposals for amending nuclear energy and nuclear liability legislation and the Government’s permit decisions. The ministry also steers the planning and implementation of nuclear waste management. The Nuclear Waste Management Fund operates in connection with the Ministry.

 

The Ministry of Employment and the Economy represents Finland in the major international organisations in the nuclear energy sector and participates in negotiations on the international agreements of the sector. Furthermore, the Ministry grants for its part funding to research that supports supervision of the use of nuclear energy.

 

In Finland STUK - Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority Finland, operating under the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, is responsible for the supervision of nuclear safety and the use of radiation.

 

Many other governmental and local organisations, as well as the municipalities locating the nuclear power plants, participate in the supervision of the nuclear power plants required by the nuclear energy law or other legislation.
