Evaluation: Centre of Expertise Programme promoting innovation activity in the regions

The Centre of Expertise Programme has significantly improved innovation activity in its target regions. The impact of a deeper level of cooperation and division of tasks between regions is particularly visible in the development of the competitiveness and attractiveness of smaller localities. Enterprises and research institutes have also been able to strengthen their regional cooperation.

Parliament approves construction of two new nuclear power plant units

On 1st July 2010, the Finnish Parliament voted on the two decisions-in-principle approved by the Government in May for the construction of additional nuclear power plants. Parliament voted 120–72 in favour of the decision-in-principle approving the construction of a new power plant unit, Olkiluoto 4, by Teollisuuden Voima Oyj. The favourable decision-in-principle regarding Fennovoima Oy's application to construct a new nuclear power plant in Simo or Pyhäjoki was also approved, by 121–71 votes.

Centre of Expertise Programme promoting innovation activity in the regions

The Centre of Expertise programme (2007–2013) has succeeded in boosting the competitiveness and attractiveness of small localities in particular. It has also enhanced the division of duties between regions, while enabling closer cooperation between enterprises and research institutions working in different regions.

Government decision on two new nuclear power plant units

On 6 May 2010, the Finnish Government made two decisions-in-principle in favour of additional construction of nuclear power. Teollisuuden Voima Oyj’s application for constructing a new nuclear power plant unit, Olkiluoto 4, in Eurajoki, and Fennovoima Oy’s application for constructing a new nuclear power plant in Simo or Pyhäjoki were both approved.
