Erkki Virtanen to continue as Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Employment and the Economy
On 14 June 2012, the Government appointed Erkki Virtanen (62) Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Employment and the Economy. His five-year term of office begins on 1 January 2013.
Mr Virtanen has served as Permanent Secretary at the Ministry since it was established on 1 January 2008. Prior to that, since 1998, he was Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Trade and Industry. In 1978–1998, Mr Virtanen held various positions at the Budget Department of the Ministry of Finance, the last being that of Director General in 1995–1998. He holds the degree of Master of Social Science, majoring in economics and statistics.
The Permanent Secretary is responsible for managing, developing and supervising the operations of the Ministry and the administrative branch as a whole. The Ministry of Employment and the Economy has 570 employees and the whole administrative branch, approximately 14,000. The branch of government, i.e. the MEE Corporate, comprises around 30 government agencies and institutions.
There were 16 applicants for the position of Permanent Secretary.
