Juhani Jokinen to head programme for promoting healthy competition

On Thursday 22 March 2012, the cabinet session on spending rights decided to launch a special programme for promoting healthy competition. The Ministry of Employment and the Economy is responsible for programme preparation. Master of Laws (trained on the bench) Juhani Jokinen, currently Director General of the Finnish Competition Authority, has been appointed Programme Director for the period 1 May 2012–30 April 2013.

Deficient competition in the home market sectors, such as retail trade and construction, is raising product price levels and undermining incentives to innovate, thus affecting productivity and reducing growth.

– The programme for promoting healthy competition is designed to tackle these challenges. Fair competition between businesses, based on common rules, is a prerequisite for a well-performing economy. The aim is for consumers to be able to choose products from a wider selection, at competitive prices, says Lauri Ihalainen, Minister of Labour.

Juhani Jokinen has been with the Finnish Competition Agency for over 20 years, and has been Director General since 2005.
